چکیده

The thermohaline circulation (THC) affects the meridional atmospheric temperature gradient and therefore the atmospheric wind and the wind driven ocean circulation. The wind driven circulation (WDC), in turn, affects the THC by the advection of salinity anomalies into deep water formation sites. This paper considers this two way coupling between the WDC and THC, using tools from engineering feedback control. The two way feedback can have a significant effect on the dynamics of the coupled system. For a reasonable choice of parameters, the feedback destabilizes the THC equilibrium for low fresh-water forcing. For higher fresh water forcing, the feedback results in a new stable equilibrium instead of the large amplitude limit cycle that develops without feedback. It is expected that the analysis approach used here may be broadly applicable to the study of feedback interconnections of other climate systems as well.

Using ocean margin density to constrain ocean circulation and surface wind strength in the past

[1] Abstract: The density structure along the ocean margins carries an integrated imprint of ocean circulation. The difference in pressure between the eastern and western margins of the ocean reflects the net meridional geostrophic transport across the ocean basin. If one assumes that the wind driven circulation is closed in the upper ocean, the wind driven component of the net geostrophic tran...

Remote Wind-Driven Overturning in the Absence of the Drake Passage Effect

Zonal wind stress over the Southern Ocean may be responsible for a significant fraction of the meridional overturning associated with North Atlantic Deep Water. Numerical experiments by Tsujino and Suginohara imply that the zonal periodicity of the Southern Ocean is not necessary for midlatitude westerly winds to drive strong remote meridional overturning. Here, idealized numerical experiments ...

Dynamics of the Water Circulations in the Southern South China Sea and Its Seasonal Transports

A three-dimensional Regional Ocean Modeling System is used to study the seasonal water circulations and transports of the Southern South China Sea. The simulated seasonal water circulations and estimated transports show consistency with observations, e.g., satellite altimeter data set and re-analysis data of the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation. It is found that the seasonal water circulations ar...

Low-frequency Variability of the Large-scale Ocean Circulation: a Dynamical Systems Approach

Oceanic variability on interannual, interdecadal and longer time scales plays a key role in climate variability and climate change. Paleoclimatic records suggest major changes in the location and rate of deep-water formation in the Atlantic and Southern Ocean on time scales from millennia to millions of years. Instrumental records of increasing duration and spatial coverage document substantial...

The Effects of Thermohaline Circulation on Wind-Driven Circulation in the South China Sea

The dynamic influence of thermohaline circulation onwind-driven circulation in the SouthChina Sea (SCS) is studied using a simple reduced gravitymodel, in which the upwelling driven bymixing in the abyssal ocean is treated in terms of an upward pumping distributed at the base of the upper layer. Because of the strong upwelling of deep water, the cyclonic gyre in the northern SCS is weakened, bu...
